Manufacture and Trade is a perfectly viable profession for a new player. How do I know? I am a new player, coming up to 4 months now.
I have no other source of income than manufacture and sales, and now my range has expanded to include about 50-60 bpos, and loads of bpcs. None of the bpos are costing 1Bn, and thats where you went wrong in the first place. How is a new character going to mine or buy enough minerals to produce battleships at a decent rate? Much better to start with small but essential items for pvp or missions, and setup shop in a mission hub or a busy system on the edge of lowsec/0.0.
I skipped this part and moved my operation right into 0.0 from the start, knowing that I could charge absolute premium for my modules and not have to compete with Jita manufacturers with max skills and researched bpos. The risks of 0.0 do not really apply to me, I have my set of instas to empire, and i very rarely need to use anything as vulnerable as in industrial to move what i need to move.
In short, I am a manufacturer and salesman for my own products. I do not mine, I do not fight, and every time I log on to the game I am richer. Getting your friends to start production with Battleships is not a great move. 4 months in and there is still no real need for me to produce battleships. Cruisers are more profitable, because you can add a realistic premium in lowsec/0.0, that people are willing to pay. A few million extra on the price of a cruiser, people will pay. 20 M on the price of a BS , and people will actually bother to fetch one from empire.
It seems you thought you could by a BS bpo, tell your friends to head to Jita, and they would be instantly competitive against 3 year old insdustrial chars and the intense price competition there.
On the other hand I am a competitive retailer without ever researching one of my bpos so far, purely because I chose the right items to make and sell in the right place. I am starting to look into researching my bpos now, as the volume I produce is on the rise, and the savings might start to justify the extra effort.
So in my opinion, as a wannabe 'tycoon' the system is fine.
